Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey with a fast growing population of around 4.7 million, the second biggest port after Istanbul, located on the West coast of Turkey. Izmir is one of the most “modern” cities of Turkey - it hosts international fairs – and a very colourful night life.
Izmir’s cuisine has largely been affected by its multicultural history, hence the large variety of food originating from the Aegean, Mediterranean and Anatolian regions. Common dishes are tarhana soup (dried yoghurt and tomatoes), köfte, keşkek (boiled wheat with meat), zerde (sweetened rice with saffron) and mücver (zucchini and eggs).
Kemeralti is İzmir’s historic market (bazaar) district. This is one of the liveliest parts of İzmir. The big bazaar is situated in an old building with many interesting shops for carpets, nice carvings, silver, dried fruits, antiques, leathers, gold accessories, handmade ceramics, and of course many souvenir shops – and go inside Kislaragasi Han.
The Agora Shopping Center offers clothing, accessories, cosmetics, household textiles, music, book stores, and electronics – and offers different options of world cuisines.
Forum Bornova offers the latest trends in fashion, cinema, entertainment, cafes and restaurants.
